Russian spies are operating in France

Russian spies are operating in France, French authorities are investigating 40-year-old Anna Novikova, a dual French-Russian citizen, on suspicion of espionage in favor of a foreign state. Reuters’ analysis of her social media activity from 2023 to mid-2024 shows that she maintained extensive contacts with pro-Kremlin political and civic structures.

Novikova founded the humanitarian group SOS Donbass, which she claimed was created to help civilians in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine. According to prosecutors, she may have attempted to approach executives of French companies to obtain information on France’s economic interests. The names of the companies and the method of obtaining information were not disclosed.

She is currently in pre-trial detention. Her husband said she sincerely believes in her humanitarian mission and denies any involvement in espionage.

Moscow’s Agents in France

The case unfolds amid heightened fears in Europe regarding Russia’s hybrid warfare — disinformation, sabotage, influence campaigns, and political pressure. French President Emmanuel Macron recently warned that Russia is using proxy groups to target Europe and France.
