On July 19, Ivan Bakanov was fired from the post of head of the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine). On July 17, Bakanov, together with Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova, was removed from office. President Volodymyr Zelensky explained this by a large number of criminal proceedings on treason and collaborationism among law enforcement officials.
Journalist Yury Butusov, in an interview with Radio NV, stated that after the start of the war, it turned out that the top leadership of the SBU were Russian agents, and President Vladimir Zelensky had to explain why he appointed them.
The Ukrainian people need the authorities to begin to honestly take responsibility for why Russian agents were appointed to the highest positions in the Ukrainian special services, in intelligence. Some of them have already been arrested and are accused of high treason,” Butusov said in an interview with reporters.
The journalist specified that an investigation is necessary “for us to determine whether these are the only Russian agents who were in power, or perhaps there are others” and this investigation should be under parliamentary control.

Butusov said that in Ukraine, four top leaders of the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) and the fifth – the head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov – were removed from their posts due to the fact that their actions caused heavy losses to our defense capability.

“This is a whole organized criminal espionage group. This is not my guess, this is not what I told the president at a press conference a year ago in front of everyone, these are already materials from the work of the State Bureau of Investigation (State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine),” the journalist said.

The journalist also drew attention to the fact that President Volodymyr Zelensky is still evading answers, although “he must first testify at the prosecutor’s office, he must explain: why did he appoint Russian spies with his decrees?”
“For example, in 2020 Zelensky appointed General Oleg Kulinich, head of the SBU of Crimea, who actually worked and served in the FSB of the Russian Federation (Russian Federal Security Service). On July 19, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Bakanov from the post of head of the SBU. This was preceded by the detention by the SBI (State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine) of the former head of the SBU in Crimea Oleg Kulinich.
